Cunninghame Furniture Recycling Company (CFRC) working together with North Ayrshire Council (NAC) have developed a mattress reuse project. The call for which came from increased demand for reuse mattresses. This was led by calls for mattresses through the alliance with NAC Scottish Welfare Fund (SWF) and Circular Communities Consortium.
Working with NAC Waste Services, CfrFRC applied for Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS) Recycling Improvement Fund (RIF). This was to improve mattress recycling rates within HWRC sites and funded professional cleaning and sanitising equipment. Reuse containers, specifically for mattresses, are installed at each of NAC’s 4 Household Waste Recycling Centre’s (HWRC) sites. The 3 mainland sites will be serviced weekly and the Brodick container monthly (see below for container locations and details)
CFRC will service the containers by collecting the mattresses. This is for cleaning, sanitising and preparing them for reuse. Increasing the number of reusable mattresses saves them from landfill and fly-tipping. We will reuse or recycle 100% of collected mattresses. We will post figures every month on our Social Impacts page.
Cleaning equipment has now been bought and CFRC staff are trained on its operation. The professional cleaning of mattresses can now be done in house. CFRC have shared a 94 square metres of warehouse space to deal only with processing and storing of mattresses.
